The
"Orientation and Rehabilitation Center",
founded on August 25th 1987 is located in the suburb of
Inhaúma. It is a charitable institution for social
assistance dedicated to the qualification, rehabilitation
and social promotion of children suffering from any mental
(light or moderated) disabilities, as well as those with
learning and communicating difficulties.
Its facilities include 13 rooms and a team of specialized
professionals such as psychologists, speech therapists,
pedagogues, social assistants, specialists in physical movement,
art teachers and art therapists.
The Institution assists from Mondays to Fridays, from 8
a.m to 5. p.m., per month, in its ambulatory, more than
200 poor children from 0 to 18 years old, all residents
in one of the poorest and violent suburbs of Rio de Janeiro,
the so-called "Complexo do Alemão".
Besides the medical care, the children and teenagers also
attend cultural and mosaic workshops, lectures about health
care, sexual diseases, drugs, hygiene and pregnancy prevention
(birth control methods).
To facilitate the social acceptance of its patients, the
institution has developed leisure and cultural activities.
It maintains associations with shopping centers, theaters,
museums, parks and other entities, in order to organize
visits and sights to these places.
